Madoff prison number proves to be a lottery winner, but do you still play?

May 2nd, 2009UncategorizedBernard Madoff's prison number 61727-054 landed one lottery player in the US with $1500. Not bad going considering the amount of money people lost in the Ponzi scheme that Madoff was behind. At least some people are winning from the situation.
But this has got me thinking about the lottery. I played yesterday and didn't win a penny (although dreaming about how much I might win and what I would spend it all on was rather fun). Is the lottery becoming more appealing, or are people shying away from spending unnecessary money?
On one hand, the National Lottery can be seen as a 'quick fix' to your money problems. Particularly in a recession, it would be lovely to wake up and think "I never have to worry about money again". That would be great. But really, the chances of winning are still pretty small, aren't they? Although I did win £10 a little while ago. That was rather exciting.
So in hard times, are people using the lottery as a little bit of escapism? It's fun to dream about what you might win, and even if you don't, you've only spent £1. That's not so bad, is it?
So tell me about your lottery habits. Do you play regularly? How do you choose your numbers? Do you go for the 'lucky dip', or your anniversary or another special date? Or do you shun the competition and think it's a waste of money? The National Lottery is full of dreams and it's meant to be fun, but with our spending habits changing, I'm not so sure we're buying those tickets like we used to.
